Maintaining Your Health Goals While Traveling

Do you like to travel?

You may not get to do it as often as you like, but exploring new places and taking a break from everyday life can be SO enjoyable, not to mention a great way to connect with family. However, maintaining your health goals while traveling can be a bit challenging.

Staying consistent with fitness and nutrition while on the road may seem like a daunting task. Various factors contribute to the complexity of maintaining a healthy lifestyle during vacations.

Here are some common challenges that many women face:
  • Limited options: Finding healthy food choices on vacation can be challenging, with tempting fast-food chains and high-calorie restaurants often being the norm.
  • Time constraints: Busy schedules filled with sightseeing and other activities may leave little time for locating healthy food options, leading to quick and easy fast food choices or even skipped meals.
  • Social pressure: Dining out with friends and family is a significant part of vacations, and the pressure to indulge in unhealthy foods or drinks may arise in such situations.
  • Desire to relax: Vacations are often associated with overindulgence, fostering a mindset of “treating yourself” with unhealthy foods.

Amidst the abundance of tempting foods and drinks, it’s easy to feel like you’ve undone all your progress by the time you return home. But do not worry, I am here to help!

As someone who used to buy into ALL of the above and treat vacations as a FREE FOR ALL, I have finally learned the balance between enjoying my treats and maintaining my healthy lifestyle while away.  I finally decided that I refuse to compromise my health goals and feel regretful upon returning home.

What if I told you that there was a way to enjoy your vacation and return home proud and confident that you stayed true to your health goals? I assure you, it’s possible!

Here are seven tips to help you stay on track with your healthy eating and fitness habits while on vacation:
    • Plan ahead: Research healthy dining options at your destination and locate restaurants or grocery stores offering nutritious choices.
    • Pack healthy snacks: Bring along favorites like fresh fruit, nuts, and protein-rich bars to keep you fueled between meals.
    • Stay hydrated: Carry a refillable water bottle and ensure you stay adequately hydrated throughout your trip.
    • Practice intuitive eating: Consider maintaining your fasting window or using a relaxed approach like the “eat to 80% full” rule.
    • Choose whole foods at restaurants: Opt for dishes with fresh local ingredients, such as grilled meats, vegetables, salads, and whole-grain options.
    • Prioritize Protein: Be conscious of choosing protein rich meals, rather than ones that are FILLED with only carbs and fats.
    • Practice moderation: Embrace the mantra of “Memories Over Macros” but balance indulgences with healthy choices for a post-vacation feel-good factor.
    • Stay active: Engage in activities that make you feel good, whether it’s structured workouts or exploring the local area on foot.

Build a healthy lifestyle you love, and remember to enjoy your vacation without stressing too much about a rigid plan. A healthy lifestyle should include recovery, sleep, and relaxation, ensuring it’s something you genuinely love.
